It is hard to tell that Hurricane Ike is out there if you look at the gorgeous weather here in the Keys today. As of the 11 AM advisory though, we will most likely have some wind, more rain - which we need - and the kids will have 2 more days off of school.

In the meantime, here are a few useless facts you should know that I found in one of our local newspapers - The Conch Republic Coconut Telegraph :

* Monroe County was named after President James Monroe

* The population of Key Largo is 11,886 as of the year 2000

* The Name Key Largo comes from the Spanish Cayo Largo or Long Key

* Spanish explorers sailed by Islamorada, saw the purple hue of its coastline (from the lavender shells of sea snails, and gave it its name "islas moradas", Spanish for purple isles.

* The name Tavernier comes from the French Tavern Keeper.

* Marathon Key was once known as Key Vaca.

* The "Adams Cut" was named after Marvin Adams a local businessman who owned the land that the cut runs through. He was the prime mover for the project.

* The Adams cut opened for boat traffic on February 26, 1961.

* The highest point in the Keys is 18 feet on Windley Key.

* The Keys were discovered by Ponce De Leon on May 12, 1513.
